Using glulam for construction work is a climate-smart move, as this material consumes less energy in production, transport and final processing than other comparable building materials. In glulam manufacture, Martinsons uses raw materials from nearby forests, which reduces the need for long-distance, environmentally-damaging transport, and most of the energy used comes from bio-fuel produced in-house. 

Martinsons' glulam is available FSC®-labelled, (FSC-C107490) which guarantees that we meet the relevant standards for responsible forest management and traceability of raw materials. The company's facilities are also certified as per ISO 14001 and PEFC for traceability of raw materials. 

Carbon footprint - how to interpret the tables
To make it easier for our customers to make environmentally-aware choices, we at Martinsons have calculated our products' carbon footprint, in other words, the amount of greenhouse gas emissions caused by each individual product. As the table shows, all our glulam products have a negative value for carbon footprints, which means that less is generated in the way of carbon dioxide emissions than is bound during their life cycle. In other words, they are climate-neutral.

The calculations of a product's carbon footprint take into account everything from carbon dioxide emissions during felling and at the production plant, to energy consumption and transportation. The shorter the distance for transportation from the production plant in Västerbotten to the product's final destination, the better the carbon footprint value. Calculations have therefore been performed using a few different final destinations as examples – Sundsvall, Stockholm and Göteborg.

To take one example: we have a glulam beam, dimensions 90x270, for transportation to final destination Stockholm where it will be used. The wood material used for the beam in question binds 1.14 times more carbon dioxide per metre length during its life cycle than the beam causes in carbon dioxide emissions, taking all the aforementioned factors into account. 

How do glulam products work as a carbon sink? Here is a calculation example.
The carbon footprint calculations also include calculations of how much carbon is bound in the products during their service life, to then be finally released when they are incinerated or go to landfill at some future point.

For example, each individual piece of glulam decking measuring 26 x 170 x 4800 mm binds 15.5 kg C02 up until the point when it is no longer used and therefore goes to landfill or is incinerated. This means that a normal-size balcony measuring 20 m2 binds a total of 380 kg C02 during its service life.
