Hanging trusses make extended spans possible without the need to increase the thickness of the bridge deck. Hanging trusses comprise a load-bearing system in which the girders are elastically supported by posts or uprights that are suspended from compression struts. Traffic loads from the roadway are transferred to the truss framework which is arranged alongside the roadway. The truss framework makes it possible for the roadway construction height to be relatively low and thus allows for good clearance height underneath the bridge.

Depending on the number of uprights, a distinction exists between simple and multiple hanging trusses. The lateral stiffening of the compression strutting is achieved in the same way as for arch bridges. The road surface is made of wood or asphalt. Dimensioning and surface treatment are executed in accordance with the current Swedish bridge standard and the service life is 40-80 years.
